The college is a statutory body which was granted faculty status by the University Council in July 1997.
The college comprises all students enrolled for degrees and graduate diplomas offered by the college and all academic, administrative, technical and clerical staff.
On the Caulfield campus, the college has the departments of Ceramic Design, Fine Art and Graphic Design, the Centre for Industrial Design, the Theory and History of Art Unit and the college office. The college has two schools: the Peninsula School of Art at Peninsula campus, Frankston and the Gippsland School of Art at Gippsland campus, Churchill.
The main business of the college is delegated to the college board which normally meets five times a year. The college board comprises heads of schools, departments and centres, representatives from the academic staff of the college, student members of the college, and representatives from the Faculty of Arts.
Except in certain matters on which it has power to act, the college board makes recommendations through the Faculty of Arts faculty board to the university's Academic Board or through the Academic Board to the University Council.
The college board has standing committees empowered to act on behalf of the board when an immediate decision is required. These committees include:
(a) the Committee of Undergraduate Studies, which advises the board on matters relating to the undergraduate and honours degrees of the college;
(b) the Committee of Graduate Studies, which advises the board on matters relating to graduate programs of the college;
(c) the Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Committee, which advises the board on health and safety issues in the college;
(d) the Exclusions Committee, which advises the board on students with unsatisfactory progress;
(e) the Committee of Research, which advises the board on research issues of the college.
The chief officers of the college are the dean/director of the college, and the executive officer (who are located on the Caulfield campus). The dean/director is a professor of the college and presides over meetings of the college, the college board and sits on its committees. The executive officer is responsible for registrar and financial functions of the college.
