10 Course and subject approval and amendment procedures

One of the primary functions of the Education Committee is to process requests for new courses and subjects and amendments to existing courses and subjects for the Academic Board. The requests shall come via the appropriate faculty board, and shall be forwarded to the Academic Board with recommendations for action.

The Education Committee shall consider the principles outlined in this education policy in deciding whether to recommend approval or re-evaluation of proposals. The approved proformas shall be used when developing a course or subject proposal for transmission to the committee. The committee shall forward to the Academic Board all proposals for new courses and major changes to existing courses, with its recommendations. Lists of new subjects which the committee recommends for approval shall also be forwarded to the board. Any member of Academic Board may ask to see the full documentation for subject proposals. Other items which the committee feels are points of contention may be included in its report to the board from time to time.

Regarding proposals for amendments to subjects and more particularly to courses, only those amendments which are considered by the individual faculty boards to be anomalous, which have been disputed, which have cross-faculty implications or which require changes to university legislation shall be reported to the committee for recommendation to Academic Board. Those changes which the faculty considers routine but which involve major changes to course progression (for instance, when the changes affect a sequence of subjects, or are changes to the course core subjects) shall be reported to the Education Committee (for information purposes) at the time they occur. Any changes in legislation shall be reported to the Education Committee for transmission, ultimately, to Council. Other amendments shall be reported on an annual basis in summary form, via the dean of the faculty.
