Student welfare services

The Student Welfare Service, an MSA service on the Clayton campus, assists both students in crisis as well as those seeking general welfare information and assistance. The service provides a vital first-contact point to define a problem a student may be experiencing, then assists the student, or makes an appropriate referral to either another university department or an outside community organisation.

The student welfare officers realise that students experience problems in areas such as personal growth; relating to other people including partners, children, parents and friends; and coping with the pressures of study. Difficulties may also arise from illness or injury, or problems may occur with employers. Financial pressures are common and students may need assistance in understanding and fulfilling the requirements of Austudy, or their eligibility for social security benefits.

The student welfare officers are two of the sex-based-harassment advisers on the Clayton campus.

Appointments may be made and/or drop-in sessions are available. The Student Welfare Service is located in the Union building, Clayton Campus. It is open from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm. Telephone 9905 3126 or 9905 4165.

Mr John Milburn, welfare counsellor, is employed by the Monash University Student Union (MUSU) Inc. at the Caulfield campus. Mr Milburn is a professionally qualified counsellor, and is available to discuss issues of personal welfare, financial difficulties and budgeting, disability and handicapped access matters, tenants rights, Austudy, Abstudy and the Homeless Allowance. He is also one of the sex-based-harassment advisers on campus.

In addition, he is responsible for the housing service at Caulfield.

For appointments to see Mr Milburn telephone 9571 1066 (internal 32500 or 32525), or call at the Union reception desk, level 2, 2 Princes Avenue, Caulfield East.

A part-time welfare officer is to be appointed at Berwick, located on the second floor of Student Services.

At Parkville, contact Mr Michael Watson, registrar, ground floor, Sissons Building. Telephone 9903 9000.
