Dr Richard Morrison
6 points * Three 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour laboratory or tutorial per week * Second semester * Clayton * Prohibition: CHM1022
Objectives As for CHM1031.
Synopsis This subject continues the introduction to chemistry initiated in CHM1031 and is particularly suited to students with little background in chemistry, physics and mathematics. Emphasis will be placed on the applicability of chemistry and its impact in society. However, the subject is also designed to provide an appropriate background for students who may wish to further their studies in second and third-year chemistry. Energy: hydrocarbons and alternate energy sources, organic chemicals and polymers - functional groups and spectroscopy, chemicals of life, consumer chemicals - looking good and keeping clean, Nutrition: the basis of healthy living, medicines and toxic substances, water and air. There will be complementary practical work designed to demonstrate some of the practical techniques of the subject and show its applications. Typical experiments will include the analysis of common chemicals such as vitamin C and aspirin, and identification of inorganic and organic compounds.
Assessment Examinations (2 x 2 hours): 50% * Practical work: 30% * Regular testing: 20%
