Objectives At the completion of this subject students should understand how humans interact with their biological environment; appreciate the diversity of plants, animals and their habitats; develop skills to assess the biological health of the environment; appreciate the special multidisciplinary nature of research in environmental biology; have developed skills to design and carry out an independent research project; developed skills in analysis and presentation of quantitative information in environmental biology.
Synopsis This subject is designed for students who wish to specialise in ecology and environmental science. Topics covered include environmental conditions and their effects on animals, plants and communities, interactions between plants and animals; environmental genetics and microbiology; management of biological resources; and an introduction to ecology and environmental impacts. Part of the practical work may be offered as an optional field excursion for BSc(Environmental) students. There is no prescribed textbook for the subject and required reading will be listed in the detailed notes distributed at the first lecture.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 55% * Written work (2500 words): 45%
