Introduction to contemporary psychology

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to use knowledge base and research skills to present a coherent and critical evaluation, in essay form, of a current theoretical or empirical issue in one of the five areas studied in thesubject; demonstrate knowledge and understanding of lecture and tutorial material.
Synopsis This subject is designed for students with a general interest in the content and methods of contemporary psychology, who are not seeking an accredited major or entry to honours. Students take two compulsory lecture units (i) human development, (ii) sensation and perception, and choose one additional lecture unit from the following (iii) parametric statistics, (iv) cross-cultural psychology, (v) behaviour and heredity, and (vi) drugs and behaviour. The tutorial program is designed to enhance students' understanding of material presented in lectures and to provide opportunities for independent exploration of related topics.
Assessment Examinations (3 hours): 75% (Some examination of lecture material may occur in class) * Written work (2500 words): 25%
