Advanced systems physiology

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will have gained advanced knowledge and understanding of the physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine and gastro-intestinal systems; understand the mechanisms of cellular communication and signalling that underpin many of the physiological responses of these systems; understand how the physiological responses of these systems are controlled by neural and endocrine systems; know how these systems respond to altered physiological demands; understand practical aspects of how the function and responses of these systems can be assessed.
Synopsis This subject is designed to provide advanced knowledge and more specialised insight into the physiology of several of the vital body systems. These will include the respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine and gastro-intestinal systems. Special emphasis will be given to the interrelationships between these systems and to their control in the healthy human. Consideration will also be given to advanced aspects of the cellular communication and signalling mechanisms which underpin many of the physiological responses of these systems. Students should note that a quota applies for entry into third-year physiology.
