Algorithms and architectures for image processing

4 points * 1-hour lecture and one 2-hour laboratory class per week * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisite: PHS2442

Objectives On completion of this subject the student should know the operating principles and limitations of devices used to sense and store image data; understand the interaction between the subject and the source of illumination in image formation, including colour and multi-spectral image formation; have a broad understanding of the physiology and perceptual properties of the monochrome and colour pathways of the human vision system; have reviewed the major computer architectures which have been developed to perform image processing tasks, especially the use of pipeline processors.

Synopsis Imaging devices. Principles of illumination. Frame store fundamentals. Colour in vision. Physiology of the human vision system. Perception. Computer architecture and image processing hardware, the Connection machine, pyramids and mesh-connected processors. Neural networks. Cellular automata. Parallel processing algorithms. Real-time data compression techniques.

Assessment Examination (1.5 hours): 50% * Laboratory exam: 50%
