Objectives In this subject students will develop the laboratory skills required for research in microbiology; develop communication skills in written and oral presentations; increase ability to evaluate critically microbiological research; achieve a detailed understanding of four specialised topics in microbiology; complete a research project in molecular microbiology.
Synopsis This subject allows students to complete the requirements for the award of a Bachelor of Science honours degree within microbiology. The normal prerequisite for enrolment is a credit in each of the third-year microbiology subjects. The subject involves a combination of coursework and laboratory research and allows students to specialise in biotechnology, molecular genetics, medical microbiology, microbial physiology, molecular virology or cellular and molecular parasitology. The coursework involves colloquia that examine selected topics at an advanced level, attendance and participation in seminars, and the completion of appropriate written reports. The research component of the subject involves a research project carried out under the supervision of an academic staff member.
