4 points * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: MAT2010, MAA2011 AND MAA2032 * Prohibitions: GAS3621

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to solve simple physical problems which are modelled by the wave equation, the diffusion equation and the Laplace equation; analyse the effects of various types of boundary and/or initial conditions on the solutions of these equations; derive the basic mathematical properties of these equations.

Synopsis The wave equation, energy inequality, the heat equation, maximum principle, the Laplace equation. Poisson's formula, Dirichlet and Neumann boundary problems, well-posed problems.
