Methods of statistics

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to understand basic concepts in statistical modelling and applied probability; to apply statistical techniques to practical problems in areas such as biology, medicine and industry.
Synopsis Revision of basic probability, simple probability; random variables and their distributions, some standard distributions and their applications, sampling distributions of mean and variance; introduction to bivariate distributions, conditional expectation, simple linear regression and least squares estimation, introduction to parametric inference, chi-square goodness-of-fit test; use of MINITAB.
Assessment Examination (1.5 hours): 80% * Tests and/or assignments: 20%
