Linear mathematics

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will have an understanding of the theory and practical aspects of elementary linear algebra.
Synopsis Gaussian elimination: LU factorisation. Vector spaces: linear independence, basis, dimension. Linear transformation. Inner product: orthogonality, Gram-Schmidt procedure. Determinants. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Differential equations. Quadratic forms. Use of a computer algebra package.
Assessment Examination (1.5 hours): 80% * Tests and/or assignments: 20%
