History of mathematics

4 points * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: MAT2020

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will have an overview of mathematics through its history; understand the role of number and spatial concepts in the development of algebra, analysis and other advanced mathematical disciplines; read and appreciate some of the classics of mathematics; learn how to navigate the literature of mathematics, and use it in a scholarly manner; gain a detailed understanding of the historical development of one or more specific mathematical topics.

Synopsis This subject traces the development of the number concept, its interaction with geometry, and its influence on the development of algebra and analysis. Particular topics include the Pythagorean theorem, euclidean algorithm and pi in East and West; complex numbers; algebraic numbers and geometric constructions; infinite series.

Assessment Examinations (1.5 hours): 70% * Assignments: 30%
