MAA2042

Introduction to fluid dynamics

4 points * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: MAA2011 or MAT2030 * Corequisites: MAT2040 * Prohibitions: ATM3172

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to review the kinematics of fluid flow in a continuum model, and develop such notions as particle paths, velocity, material derivatives and vorticity; understand the development of the equations of mass and momentum, in particular in an inviscid incompressible fluid; become familiar with frictionless flow in two-dimensional and axisymmetric configurations.

Synopsis Fluid properties, compressibility and viscosity. Inviscid, incompressible fluids. Velocity field, continuity. Pressure. Equations of motion in various forms. Energy and Bernoulli's equation. Potential flow and its significance, drag. Two-dimensional solutions to Laplace's equation. Complex potential, cylinder with circulation.

Assessment Examinations (1.5 hours): 80% * Tests and assignments during the semester: 20%
