Exploration geophysics: reflection seismology

6 points * First semester * Clayton * twelve weeks lecture/practical coursework * Prohibitions: GPS3011, GPS3022

Objectives This subject aims to provide an introduction to reflection seismology; increase the understanding of how physics can be used to learn more about the earth; provide background in the mathematical treatment of wave propagation and time series analysis, and processing and interpretation of seismic data.

Synopsis This unit contains an introduction to applied seismology, including a physical and mathematical treatment of seismic wave propagation, seismic reflection imaging, well logging and seismic refraction. Variations in structure and evolution of sedimentary basins will be described as an aid to interpretation.

Assessment Practical work/assignments: 40% * 3-hour examination: 60%
