Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to construct accurate geological maps and cross-sections based on field data acquired by the student; understand the methods of acquiring structural and sedimentalogical data using the geological compass; synthesise large amounts of geological data into a final scientific report.
Synopsis Geological mapping is essential to many fields of study. This subject serves as an introduction to the methods of field mapping used by nearly all geologists and environmental scientists. This five-day intensive mapping camp in the Buchan area of eastern Victoria includes instruction in the proper use of the geological compass for acquiring structural data, use of aerial photographs for determining accurate locations in the field, assessing outcrop geology (mineralogy, lithology and structure), correct methods for entering data into a field notebook, plotting of geological data on base maps in the field and at the base camp in the evening, constructing geological maps by synthesising smaller datasets and extrapolation into areas of non-exposure, and the construction of geological cross-sections. At the conclusion of the field mapping exercise, students must synthesise these data and present them and their interpretations in a final written field report.
