Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have developed advanced practical skills in fundamental research; developed skills in literature searching, report writing and oral presentation; achieved both self reliance and the ability to work in a team; studied from a range of chosen topics in the area of research specialisation.
Synopsis Students who are accepted may elect to specialise in any of the areas of chemistry on offer in the department. In the first half of the year there will be a series of advanced units, four of which will be common to all students, and four others can be chosen from a variety of options. In addition, students will be working on a research project throughout the year and will be introduced to the research methods in the area of specialisation under the guidance of a supervisor. During the year two essays related to the project are required and students will attend and deliver seminars in their broad area of research. The honours year normally commences early in February, by arrangement with the supervisor. A minor thesis is required at the end of the year. Mid-year entry is also permitted.
Assessment Examinations (on average, one 2-hour examination in each of the seven units): 50% * Research report and oral examination on research project: 50%
