Objectives On the completion of this subject students should be able to understand the structure and function of bones, muscles, nerves and vessels in the human lower limb; dissect the lower limb using human cadavers; interpret X-ray and computerised tomography (CT) films of the hip and lower limb; outline the ultrastructure and function of cells; recognise the primary tissue types by microscopic analysis and understand their functional attributes based upon subclassifications; demonstrate knowledge of living anatomy by palpation of surface landmarks on living subjects.

Synopsis ANT2222 provides an understanding at the macroscopic and microscopic levels of the structure and function of limbs, the central, autonomic and peripheral nervous system and the cellular basis of human tissues and their functional organisation into organ systems. Topics will include osteology, radiology, myology, biomechanics related to muscle actions and movements, and studies of the relationships of bone, muscle, joints, arteries, veins and nerves in the human lower limb. The recognition and function of primary tissue types is considered together with methods of tissue preparation, cell ultrastructure, cell biology, neurohistology and introductory pathology.
