Bachelor of Applied Science/Diploma in Environmental Management

Important information

Berwick campus (Monash and Casey Institute of TAFE) and Dandenong (Casey Institute of TAFE)

Course code:

The Bachelor of Applied Science/Diploma in Environmental Management is a new double award course which is normally completed in four years of full-time study through the Berwick campus. The diploma component of the course is undertaken through the Casey Institute of TAFE. Students are simultaneously enrolled in an applied science degree with Monash and the diploma with Casey TAFE. The course provides students with the opportunity to combine the the vocational, practical aspects of TAFE, together with the more theoretical, discipline-based courses available through the university.

The Diploma in Environmental Management provides students with particular knowledge and skills in the areas of occupational health and safety, risk assessment, waste management, environmental law, environmental monitoring and environmental management. Other electives are also available.

Simultaneously, students are also enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science and the considerable flexibility of the course allows the study of a number of major science discipline sequences including further studies in environmental science. Some programs also allow students to complete a `tagged' sequence of study in the degree component. These are all available for the double award course provided the course requirements are fulfilled. For details of the Bachelor of Applied Science subjects, sequences and various tagged degrees, refer to the appropriate sections in this handbook.

Students will be required to attend classes at the Berwick campuses of Monash University and Casey TAFE as well as the Dandenong campus of Casey TAFE.

This double award course provides students with various options including full-time, part-time and distance education modes of study. The possibility of completing the diploma and not the degree and vice-versa is also available. These options should be negotiated with the course advisers at enrolment or during progress through the course.

Typical course structure

Students enrol jointly in the Bachelor of Applied Science degree at Monash University and the Diploma of Environmental Management at the Casey Institute of Technical and Further Education.

The TAFE course, if taken individually, comprises two years of full-time study. The BAppSc, if taken as a single degree, requires three years of full-time study. The combining of the two programs within a period of four years of full-time study can be achieved by allowing cross-credits.

The university components of the course will be coordinated and timetabled on different days to the TAFE components. In 1997, the laboratory work for the university subjects will be undertaken in a residential school (normally one week per semester maximum and less for some subjects) arrangement.

Course requirements

BAppSc/DipEnvMgt

For the BAppSc/DipEnvMgt award, students will be required to complete subjects with a total credit value of at least 108 points for the degree component, as follows:

1 a minimum of 102 points and a maximum of 108 points offered by the School of Applied Science and creditable to the Bachelor of Applied Science including:

2 an optional elective of six points from non-School of Applied Science subjects.

Diploma in Environmental Management

The requirements of the Diploma in Environmental Management for this double award course have been determined by the Casey Institute of TAFE and are stipulated in the Casey Institute of TAFE handbook. These include mandatory on-the-job training, compulsory course modules and elective course modules.

A typical course program for a student undertaking this double award in full-time mode appears in table 3.
