Community mental health studies

Objectives On completion of this subject the students are expected to explore the dynamics of human behaviour in community settings; identify community mental health resources; examine strategies for caring for specific psychosocial issues and/or clients at risk; utilise knowledge of counselling and treatment modalities; demonstrate skills in conducting group sessions for clients which assist with the promotion of mental health; and describe the needs of families and helpers who are caring for the acutely disturbed individuals.
Synopsis This subject introduces theoretical foundations and the broad range of skills associated with community mental health. Subject content includes crisis theory and crisis intervention; mental status examination; interviewing and interpersonal skills; introduction to psychiatric disorders; advanced counselling and group skills; introduction to psychological therapies; and mental health support networks.
Assessment Essay: 50% * Fieldwork reports (2 reports): 50% * Clinical: Satisfactory achievement of specific clinical objectives is required for a pass to be awarded in the subject
