Objectives At the completion of this subject it is anticipated that the student should be able to take a leadership role in their healthcare organisation by encouraging other nurses to reflect on and improve nursing practice, and patient outcomes through research application; formulate a research project proposal, including a rationale and methodology; utilise independent learning and problem solving skills, in order to resource professional information; assist other nurses to design and implement research projects related to their area of practice; utilise the interpersonal skills necessary to gain access to, and gather the data required for such a project; prepare a submission for an ethics committee taking into account the ethical guidelines prepared by the Monash Standing Committee on Ethics in Research on Humans; write an article for publication in a scholarly journal or present an educational session for peers based on the project.

Synopsis The purpose of this subject is to involve you, the specialist gerontic nurse, in a research process which is relevant to your work. You will be required to design and implement a clinical project which builds on the knowledge acquired in GHS7640 (Methods of information collection, analysis and usage). It is intended that with the assistance of your subject adviser, you will develop, implement and evaluate a project which generates nursing knowledge relevant to clinical practice or, the care of aged people in the organisation in which you work. The subject further aims to demystify the process of clinical research so that you will be encouraged to make research a routine part of your professional practise. The subject is largely self-directed with your subject adviser acting as the supervisor for the project. In this respect it prepares you for a larger project if you continue your studies further. The subject is offered in recognition that an experienced Registered Nurse should be able to take a leadership role in developing improvements to clinical, educational and administrative areas of nursing practice.

Assessment Research proposal and research project: 100%
