Nursing practice 5: Family and reproductive health nursing
6 points * 5 hours per week (lectures, tutorials, labs) plus 75 hours clinical * Gippsland and Peninsula * Prerequisites: NUR1101, NUR1102, NUR2103, NUR2113, NUR1301, NUR1302, NUR2303
Objectives On completion of this subject students are expected to demonstrate sound knowledge of a range of health problems which must be considered when caring for individuals within the context of family life across the lifespan; identify and apply appropriate nursing therapeutics for individuals within the context of family life in the clinical fields of maternity and gynaecological nursing, paediatric nursing, and sexual and reproductive health nursing; identify the health and support services available to individuals within the context of family life; identify areas related to sexual and reproductive health in which the nurse has a primary responsibility for the delivery of care to individuals and family; develop a basic understanding of pregnancy, the birthing process and current trends in the care of the pregnant woman and her family; develop a knowledge base from which care can be delivered in regard to sexuality and functions and dysfunctions of the female and male; demonstrate safe clinical practice based on sound theoretical knowledge.
Synopsis This subject will provide an opportunity for the student to explore the health of individuals within the context of family life, using a lifespan developmental framework. It will introduce the theoretical background necessary to prepare the student to practice with beginning competence in the areas of maternity nursing, paediatric nursing, sexual and reproductive health nursing. Nursing practice skills in health teaching, and health promotion are applied for the purpose of preparing clients for self care and caregiving roles.
