Objectives At the completion of this subject, students (a) should have an appreciation of the applications of computers and computer based systems in the health field; the functions of a computerised data processing system; the role of a computerised hospital information system; the process of defining and implementing a computerised information system; the issues raised by the use of computers in nursing; the use of personal computers as a tool for professionals (b) be able to use nursing information systems currently in use in hospitals; have a working knowledge of a personal computer and its operating system; use a personal computer as a tool for word processing, database and statistical analysis.
Synopsis As well as developing an appreciation of computer technology and the computer system development process, students will be introduced to a range of common computer applications currently in use by nurses in hospital settings. Issues of concern arising from the use of computer systems in healthcare such as security and privacy will also be considered. The laboratory based practical work will develop a working knowledge of a personal computer and its operating system, and provide an opportunity to develop skills in the use of a personal computer for word processing, database and statistical analysis. The subject is taught by lectures and computer laboratory work.
Assessment Examination: 50% * Research paper: 50%
