Objectives On completion of this subject, it is expected that the student should be able to explain how models of health are applied in different health care contexts; demonstrate beginning skills in health assessment of individuals and community; describe the roles of community health nurses; outline community support services within a specific locality; develop a framework for compiling a community profile; evaluate the application of primary health care principles and strategies in health care programs at a national and local level; develop and implement health promotion activities in community settings; demonstrate skills for effective communication; identify client's needs in relation to the activities of daily living; assist the client in maintaining and supporting the activities of daily living within a safe environment; evaluate his/her own performance in terms of nursing care.
Synopsis This subject aims to assist the student in developing a knowledge of the nature of health over the lifecycle, primary health care, health promotion and their relationship to nursing practice. The subject is taught by lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, laboratory and clinical practice. To help prevent the transmission of infectious diseases students will be required to consult with an `infection control physician' so that their immunisation status can be checked and if necessary upgraded. Appointments with an infection control physician' will be made for each student during semester one and immunisations will be available if needed through the campus nurse.
Assessment Written examination (2 hours): 50% * Practical skills assessment: 30% * Clinical competency assessment: 20% * 80% attendance at lectures and practical classes and 100% attendance at clinical practice is mandatory.
