Objectives On successful completion of this subject it is expected that students will be able to understand the factors that contribute to mental health/mental illness across the life-span; develop awareness of the health of individuals within family units and the need for including the family/significant others in the promotion and the maintenance of mental health; understand the difference between a therapeutic relationship and friendship and the implications for effective psychiatric nursing practice; develop the skills in conducting a mental status examination; develop skills in determining effective intervention strategies for the disturbed patient who is at risk; understand the legal and ethical issues related to mental health care; develop skills in formulating, implementing and evaluating psychotherapeutic interventions for the mentally ill patient and their family/carers; understand the needs of families and helpers who are continually caring for the individual with a mental illness; develop an awareness of the framework for mental health services in Victoria.
Synopsis This subject focuses on mental health problems across the lifespan. It builds on concepts learnt in psychology and fundamentals of nursing to explore the assessment and treatment of individuals with a mental health disorder. The subject aims to enable students to develop an understanding of contemporary psychiatric nursing knowledge. A series of lectures will be used to provide theoretical background and to facilitate awareness and interest in psychiatric mental health nursing. Clinical experience will be provided within hospitals, community and health care settings where issues in mental health are encountered. Attendance at clinical sessions is mandatory. Reflective practice is encouraged through group/individual debriefing sessions.
Assessment Written Assignment (2500-3000 words): 50% * Examination: 50% * Assessment for this subject will be based on a minimum pass grade for clinical experience, assignment and examination * Final grading will be an aggregate score * Assessment of clinical experience will be based on the student's performance in the clinical setting including the application of knowledge to practice, attitude to delivery of psychiatric nursing care, participation in debriefing sessions, and completion of clinical rotation booklet.
