Transition to professional roles: ethics, law and management

6 points * 4 hours per week * First semester * Gippsland and Peninsula * Prerequisite: NUR1202

Objectives At the end of this subject, and with further reading, it is expected that the student will be able to appreciate that health care organisations function within political and economic constraints; discuss the role of organisational structures in the workplace; evaluate the contribution of leadership, management and team work to provision of quality nursing care; apply a range of problem solving and time management strategies that enhance the organisation of clinical workload; demonstrate a variety of effective communication techniques relevant to nursing and working effectively in a multidisciplinary team; describe effective stress management options that promote the nurse's ability to cope with challenging and critical incidents; demonstrate a knowledge of common law and statute law pertinent to nursing practice; compare a justice based approach to ethical reasoning with an ethic of care; identify and implement strategies that may be used to assist in resolving ethical and legal issues that are frequently encountered by health professionals within a variety of clinical situations.

Synopsis This subject introduces the student to the principles of management and professional issues as they apply to health care, and focuses on organisational structures; political and economic processes and constraints; evaluation of leadership; teamwork and multidisciplinary decision making. This subject will also provide the student with the opportunity to focus in more depth on nursing ethics and law. Students will have the opportunity to develop a framework against which they may judge ethical and legal standards of nursing practice in their clinical practice area.

Assessment Written examination: 30% * Assignments x 2: 50% * Diary/reflective practice: 20%
