Objectives On completion of this subject, students will have acquired an overview of the discipline of psychology in terms of its theoretical foundations and the research methodologies used. Students should develop critical reading skills to be able to evaluate relevant disseminated research findings, and be able to write according to the accepted APA conventions.
Synopsis This subject introduces psychology as a scientific discipline. Selected key areas within psychology are expired in detail. These include sensation and perception; states of consciousness; abnormal behaviour and psychotherapy; learning; memory; motivation and emotion; developmental psychology and social psychology. The relevance of these topics for nurses is emphasised.
Assessment Critical reading assignment: 15% * Essay: 25% * Final examination: 60% * A pass on the examination is a requirement for successful completion of this subject
