Clinical studies
Objectives On completion of this subject students will have an understanding of hospital and community-based clinical medicine, to allow competent practise as a junior doctor; specific aspects of clinical practise in a rural community; ethical issues related to patient care; communication skills required to establish appropriate rapport with patients and their families or caregivers and recognition of the role of this in the therapeutic process; the importance of working as a member of the health care team and the role of each of the team members; cost benefit issues in relation to patient investigation and management; the responsibility of maintaining high standards of medical practise into the future and an appropriate commitment to continuing medical education. Technical skills and the ability to perform minor procedures will be developed to a level that will allow competent practise as a junior doctor.
Synopsis Thirty-six weeks contact teaching as outlined for each of the subjects involved in the sixth year of the curriculum.
Assessment Two clinical long case examinations: 20% * OSCA 20% * Combined clinical and community health studies MCQ: 5% * Psychological medicine: 7.5% * Community medicine: 7.5% * MED5000: 40%
