Objectives At the completion of this subject, students will have a sound understanding of the presenting symptoms and signs of clinical illness and how to elicit these through history taking and physical examination, in relation to the major disciplines of medicine, surgery, paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology; the principles underlying investigation and management of clinical illness with more detailed knowledge of these in relation to both paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology; the principles of palliative care; core knowledge in relation to all these disciplines. Students will further develop an appreciation of ethical issues related to patient care; the importance of and skills in establishing appropriate rapport with patients and their families or caregivers with recognition of the role of this in the therapeutic process; cost benefit issues in relation to patient investigation and management; the responsibility of maintaining high standards of medical practice with a commitment to continuing medical education. Students will also have gained six weeks experience in a pursuit entirely of their own choice and relevant to long term practice (the elective).
Synopsis Forty-two weeks including six weeks elective, all carried out as outlined in the fifth-year subjects.
Assessment Medicine: 25% * Surgery: 25% * Obstetrics and Gynaecology: 25% * Paediatrics: 25% * Infectious diseases (satisfactory faculty requirement) * Elective report (satisfactory faculty requirement)
