Objectives The student is expected to develop an awareness and understanding of the mechanism and environment causing soil and rock slope instability and an ability to calculate factor of safety. The student is expected to develop an understanding of the principles of rock mechanics and simple rock and rock mass behaviour under static loading, underground excavation design and decision making processes with respect to rock structures and the ability to plan and design a number of cost effective ground improvement techniques.
Synopsis Site investigation and subsoil exploration by geophysical exploration methods, different in-situ tests, stability analysis of earth slopes, introduction to rock mechanics, properties of rock materials and rock masses, geomechanical properties of rock, rock slope design, rock foundation, slope stabilisation, underground excavation design, monitoring earth and rock related structures, ground improvement techniques.
