Objectives The student is expected to develop an awareness and understanding of the need for safe and economic extraction of minerals, process of discovering minerals deposits, rock excavation, drilling techniques, explosives. The student is expected to develop basic knowledge of production methods in both surface and underground mines and various methods of developing a mine.

Synopsis Introduction to the mining industry. Exploration and appraisal of mineral deposits, establishing a mine site, drill, drilling, explosives and blasting. Mine development. Different techniques of mining (surface and underground); environmental, safety and political issues.

Assessment Examination: 50%
