Objectives To provide a background to those areas of chemistry that will be useful during studies and later professional work in engineering
Synopsis Stoichiometry, atomic theory of matter, chemical periodicity, covalent compounds, gases, condensed phases and solutions, equilibrium, acid/base reactions, dissolution and precipitation equilibria, thermodynamic processes and thermochemistry, spontaneous change and equilibrium, electrochemistry, solid-state structures (close packed structures and structures of silicates and ceramics) and a brief treatment of organic structures and polymers.
Assessment Examinations (2.5 hours): 70% * Laboratory work: 20% * Computer tests: 10%
