Physics I
D R Mills
4 points * 26 lectures, 26 laboratory/problem class hours * First/Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: VCE Physics or PHS1800
Objectives Students are expected to understand the basic principles of mechanics, waves and optics; to be able to apply these principles in simple engineering applications; and to carry out reliable measurements, analyse data and present these in a scientific report.
Synopsis Mechanics: Newton's laws of motion, friction; work, energy; momentum and collisions; rotational dynamics; fluid statics, laminar fluid flow, Bernoulli's equation. Wave-optics: simple harmonic oscillations, damping and resonance; waves, reflection, intensity, dB; Doppler effect; refraction, geometric optics; interference and diffraction.
Assessment Examination: 70% * Laboratory: 20% * Tests: 10%
