Mechanical design: materials selection

Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of selection of appropriate materials in mechanical engineering design.

Synopsis Criteria for selection of materials for mechanical design. The influence on the design/materials selection process of operational requirements, manufacturing processes, failure modes, notch sensitivity and crack propagation, corrosion and the joining of advanced composite structures.

Assessment Examination: 70% * Laboratories/tutorials: 30%
