Engineering practices: design of machine elements

Objectives The development of knowledge of a range of standard machine elements and the methods used to select and use them, the relationship between manufacturing processes, economics, and geometrical requirements for component function. Knowledge of issues affecting the failure of machine components, including fracture, fatigue, creep and corrosion. The student should develop ability to apply systematic design processes to moderately complex machine designs, to communicate design intentions, manage time, obtain information from external sources and translate an open ended design problem to specific objectives.
Synopsis Design, value analysis and tolerancing for function and economical manufacture; geometric tolerancing. Bearing design and selection; mounting of rolling bearings. Fatigue. Design of bolted joints, welds, springs, shafts and/or other machine elements. Design project involving fluid mechanics.
