Impact of engineering systems

Objectives The subject aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the need for impact assessment and the positive effect it can have on projects; of the structure of an impact assessment report; of the interrelationship of economic, environmental, and social factors to sustainability; of the importance of community participation in impact assessment; and of the type of impact mitigation measures appropriate for different circumstances. Students are expected to develop skills to be able to design, implement, and write up an impact assessment of a project or policy; to design and implement a community participation program; and to develop and implement economic, environmental, and social impact mitigation measures.

Synopsis Impact assessment concepts. Types of impact; social, environmental, economic, etc. Requirements for and design of assessment. Techniques and management of assessment procedures. Community participation techniques. Impact mitigation measures. Major project on application of impact assessment to an engineering problem. Emphasis on integration of environmental and development aspects. The subject is offered in problem-based learning mode.

Assessment Examination: 50% * Assignment: 50% * Students must pass both examination and assignment in order to pass the subject
