Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of energy conservation, non-renewable and renewable energy sources, load management techniques, load forecasting, basic economic calculations of demand energy effects and the need of energy for the modern society with side effects of energy production.
Synopsis Understanding energy. Energy production. Energy storage: superconductivity, magnetic storage, batteries, pump storage. New energy sources: wind, solar energy. Application of innovative energy designs: heat pumps, daylighting systems, hybrid solar-thermal and photovoltaic systems. Modern energy-efficient electrical systems: motors, drives, lighting systems. Load modelling and demand forecasting. Energy metering and billing systems. Energy tariffs. Economic analysis of energy supply and use. Energy and environment.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 70% * Practical work: 30%
