Objectives The student is expected to acquire an understanding of the application of electrical circuit theory to the generation and measurement of bioelectric phenomena.
Synopsis A rigorous coverage of resting membrane potential and action potentials, using appropriate circuit theory and mathematics. Calculations of action potential spread and speed of propagation using cable equations. The theory behind the design of electrodes and amplifiers for recording intra- and extra-cellular potentials. The nature of various electrical signals recordable from the body and the specification of equipment to record them. Stimulation of excitable tissue, leading on to the design of cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators.
Assessment Examination: 50% * Practical work: 30% * Assignment: 20%
