4 points * 36 lecture hours, 12 laboratory/tutorial hours * Second semester * Caulfield

Objectives To understand how materials deform and fail and to what extent performance can be improved by processing. To develop a broad understanding of property differences between materials within the same engineering grouping.

Synopsis Properties of alloy systems, material databases, deformation and fracture of metals, overview of arc welding techniques, corrosion fundamentals: electrochemical considerations, passivity, cathodic protection. Flammability of polymers, behaviour of rubbers, adhesives and adhesive bonding. Manufacture and processing of polymers, laminates and composites: particle and fibre reinforcement, structural composites. Structure and properties of timber. Ceramics: glasses, clay products and concrete. Ceramic properties, processing of ceramics. Ferro magnetic hysteresis curves, magnetic hard and soft materials, semi-conductor materials.

Assessment Examination: 70% * Tutorial work: 30%
