Objectives The student is expected to acquire knowledge of commonly used infrastructure engineering construction material other than steel and to develop skills in the design, specification and utilisation of these materials.
Synopsis Civil engineering material: concrete, types and properties of cement, hydration of cement, factors affecting the strength of cement, testing of cement, properties of aggregate, concrete mix design, performance of concrete structures, stress-strain behaviour of concrete, concrete durability. Bitumen: properties of bitumen and tar, measurement of bitumen viscosity and other physical properties, use of bituminous materials, principles of bituminous mix design, design procedures. Timber: types and structure of timber material, characteristics of timber, strength development of timber, defects in timber, stress grading of timber.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 70% * Laboratory work and assignments: 30%
