Objectives The student is expected to acquire an understanding of the fundamental principles and assumptions that relate to the analysis of overvoltages and surges, high voltage switchgear and system protection; to gain a basic appreciation of market forces that influence the operation and protection of power systems; and to gain the skills and attitudes that complement the above knowledge and understanding.
Synopsis Power frequency overvoltages. Lightning and switching surges. Insulation coordination. Surge protection and diverters. Travelling waves: lattice diagrams and computer analysis. Circuit interruption, arc plasma models. Circuit breaker specifications, applications and condition monitoring. TRV computer analysis, current chopping, kilometric fault. Principles of system protection, relays and protection schemes. Computer based control and supervision systems.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% * Practical work and laboratory work: 30%
