Infrastructure systems engineering

Objectives To develop a knowledge of systems engineering and its role in infrastructure planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance, with particular emphasis on the modelling of uncertainties in infrastructure engineering and management.

Synopsis The role of infrastructure systems, introduction to systems approach; applied probability theory and statistics; mathematical modelling; simulation techniques; optimisation theory and solution via computer packages; decision theory; Bayes theorem and its application in decision models; equilibrium modelling; basic theory of engineering economy; methods of cost and benefit analysis; methods of creating innovative infrastructure solutions. Practical applications in civil, construction and infrastructure engineering will be used.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 60% * Assignments: 40%
