Objectives This subject introduces the student to the concepts of modern physics and their technological applications.
Synopsis Blackbody radiation and Planck's hypothesis, photoelectric effect, atomic spectra, Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom, lasers, de Broglie waves, electron microscope, structure of the nucleus, radioactivity, radioactive decay law, gamma ray applications, fission and fusion, the quantum model of the hydrogen atom, exclusion principle, band theory of solids, conduction in metals, insulators and semiconductors, diodes and solar cells.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 75% * Laboratory work: 25%
