Objectives The student is expected to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of kinematics and kinetics analytical techniques applied to mechanisms and machines.
Synopsis Introduction to mechanisms; degrees of freedom; time ratio, overlay method of synthesis. Vector loop equations, velocity diagrams, instantaneous centre method of velocity analysis. Acceleration analysis and diagrams. Kinematic analysis by complex numbers and computer methods in kinematics. Force analysis of mechanisms. Cams; choice of cam profiles matching cam motion, spring force and reaction force analysis. Introduction to gearing and gear tooth geometry. Balancing of rotating mass systems.
Assessment Examination (3 hours ): 70% * Laboratory work, a 1- hour test and tutorial: 30%
