Objectives To understand manufacturing processes and appreciate the economics, limitations and choice of process.
Synopsis Casting processes. Cold working and hot working of metal. Powder metallurgy. Welding, heat affected zone, weld cracking. Surface finishing - electroplating principles, electro machining, hot dipping, anodising processes, decorative coating. Machining processes - drilling, turning, milling, CNC, FMS, cutting tools, cutting, grinding. Metrology and surface texture measurement. The relevance of the scale of production and the economics of alternative processes. Non-destructive testing, quality control.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% * Practical work, laboratory work and test: 30%
