Objectives The subject provides knowledge and skills in facilities planning, plant layout and materials handling in both manufacturing and office environments. A student learns to apply the knowledge of method study, layout theory and materials handling concepts in designing facilities; to specify in detail the requirements for designing and developing the facilities planning process, and the materials handling system.
Synopsis Definition and strategies of facilities planning. Importance of product, process and schedule design. Activity relationships, space and personnel. Material flow patterns: analysing material flow, flow and string diagrams. Layout: types, activity relationship charts, from-to-charts, evaluating alternatives. Layout for manufacturing, office and commercial and warehouse. Introduction to quantitative methods. Computerised layout. The materials handling equation, TRANSIT MODAPTS. Unit loads. Equipment: conveyor, cranes and fork lifts, robots, etc. Physical distribution and storage. Warehousing systems. Specifying equipment. Safety: regulations for cranes, manual handling.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 70% * Seminar participation, assignments and tests: 30%
