Fluid systems and management

Objectives To develop an understanding of pumps and their design, selection and operation to achieve optimum performance.

Synopsis Fluid mechanics; characteristics of performance curves; affinity laws; effect of change of impeller diameter and running speed on performance; cavitation, net positive suction head. Pump classification - design and fabrication; materials of construction; noise and vibration; maintenance. Energy losses: determination of system head, friction losses, system resistance curves; use of computer packages. Pump model testing. Ancillary features: valves, piping, metering equipment; sealing of working fluid, bearing selection; intake and sump design. Business environment: market; competition; product lifecycle; buying models; market segmentation; product mix; purchasing and procurement; contractual factors. Selection and application; duty specification, case studies.
