R M Wootton
5 points * 39 lecture hours, 26 tutorial hours * Second semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: CVE2111
Objectives The student is expected to be able to select and apply the basic principles of fluid mechanics to practical hydraulic systems and to understand the limitations and accuracy of their solutions.
Synopsis Turbines: types, classes and specific speed, pump operating characteristics; circuit matching; pipes; energy losses, reticulation analysis, water hammer, culverts, hydraulic structures for flow measurement, hydraulics of wells, sediment transport. Open channel flow - uniform flow, gradually varying flow and rapidly varying flow; empirical friction equation; energy and momentum concepts; specific energy and critical flow; super critical and subcritical flow; hydraulic jump; channel control structures; backwater profiles; hydraulic and computer modelling of river systems.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 80% * Laboratory work: 20%
