Objectives To develop an understanding of the ocean climate and of probabilistic models of wind, waves and currents with applications in the estimation of sea states, of environmental loads on fixed and floating structures and of dispersion of pollutants such as oil spills.
Synopsis Meteorology: cyclone models, forecasting winds, hindcasting. Wave theory: generation, linear and non-linear theories, spectra, probabilities. Currents: ocean circulation, tides, internal tides and waves, measurement. Wind data, wave models, wave data, design conditions, software. Workshops and laboratories.
Assessment Examination (3 hours): 50% * Assignments and seminars: 50%
