Objectives To introduce the concept of computer-integrated manufacturing and engineering and to understand CIM systems, and to help engineers design and implement such systems.
Synopsis Computer-aided design (CAD) technologies, and the standardisation of design data needed for manufacturing. The operational principles of a complete manufacturing system. The role of the computer and its contribution to flexibility will be discussed, as well as the information flow through an entire manufacturing system. Numerically controlled machines, flexible manufacturing cells and flexible manufacturing systems. Simple manufacturing machines and how they can be interconnected in complex production facilities. Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) standards and interfaces of interest to engineering and manufacturing. Planning and scheduling of manufacturing operations. An overview of the basics of robotics and robot programming.
